Virtual Flower Arranging Class

March isn’t typically an exciting month on a florist’s calendar but we have gotten used to expecting the unexpected. Even in a flower shop we are learning to adapt to society’s need to be virtual versus the desire for human interaction. The term “zoom wedding” is officially embedded into our lexicon as is the word “virtual” next otherwise normal activities like “bridal consultation” and “flower arranging class”.

This month we partnered up with our friends at Related California to bring a virtual flower arranging class to the tenants of three luxury San Francisco condos: Mason on Mariposa, Fifteen Fifty and The Avery.

When the invitations went out, we were surprised by the level of enthusiasm that came in! A whopping 107 students RSVP’d for the class. That meant 107 bundles of snapdragons, ranunculus and tulips among other flowers to be delivered to the buildings the day of the class. Shout out to my team member, Jennifer, who is not only a flower arranging machine, but never fails to find the joy in the work we do! We streamed the class from the flower shop after we had closed for the day.

The experience was absolutely amazing for this florist.  It’s not every day that I talk to such a large group about a subject I’m passionate about, and feel challenged to articulate what goes on in the mind and behind the scenes when I create a floral arrangement.  My overall message was that there is no right or wrong way to arrange flowers, it’s more like creating jazz than painting-by-numbers.  But there are many factors to consider when arranging like color, texture and movement. As well as practical tips like creating balance, holding the blooms in place and keeping them fresh. The response from the group was enlightening with a lot of great questions being asked and points noted.  The results were beautiful—even in those little squares, I could see a lot of great work!  The hour flew by for me and I looked forward to the next class, virtual or not.

Business at the shop is gaining steam, especially now that COVID guidelines are being relaxed and people are longing for an in-store shopping experience in addition to sending and receiving flowers. When things were quiet during the pandemic, I had a long time to mull over the qualities of the next ideal person to work at Bell and Trunk and I am excited to announce that I have found her!

Molly Graves is a natural with flowers. She always comes back from the flower market with a haul that is fresh and exciting. Each floral arrangement she creates is a masterpiece. And most importantly, she pays attention to our customer’s desires and puts great care into all the work she does. It isn’t easy to jump aboard a moving freight train but Molly is adapting beautifully. We’re so excited to have her join us!
